MRI after HIFU for prostate cancer

LUA urologist Mark Emberton has recently co-authored a study recently published in the journal Radiology. The study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate the prostate of men treated with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for prostate cancer. They found that the changes induced by HIFU treatment were consistent across the group of men, and that the degree of enhancing prostate tissue on MRI correlated with the likelihood of persistent prostate cancer. These findings will help provide information to the clinician about completeness of treatment and the need for further therapy.

Mark Emberton is a Consultant Urologist based at University College Hospital and London Urology Associates. He specialises in benign and malignant disease of the prostate. Clare Allen is a Consultant Radiologist based at University College Hospital and the Princess Grace Hospital who specialises in Uro-Radiology.
