Mark Emberton is Senior Lecturer in Oncological Urology at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology, which is part of University College Hospital, London. He is also Assistant Director of the newly established Clinical Effectiveness Unit at the Royal College of Surgeons of England where he is working with a multi-disciplinary team on improving the quality of surgery, where his interest in defining and measuring surgical outcome, both good and bad, is essential. Additionally, Mark has two research fellows; one exploring a new minimally invasive way of treating recurrent prostate cancer; and the other looking at ways of using IT to make traditional medical records more useful to clinicians.
Mark has a specialist urological practice based at University College Hospital, London (Middlesex Campus), which focuses on diseases of the prostate, both benign and malignant. Additionally, he has a busy general urological practice at the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust, London.
His research interests are chiefly focused on diseases of the prostate gland. He is also interested in an evidence-based approach to clinical practice and is involved in the production of guidelines and care pathways. He is a regular presenter at international scientific meetings and has written over fifty scientific papers and many chapters for surgical texts, in addition to a number of books.
Mark is an active teacher, running training programs at the Institute of Urology for Trainees in London and South East of England. For some time Mark has had considerable interest in developing materials for patients to help them take part in shared decision making. In addition to the evaluation of the content and value of booklets and videos, Mark has been working with others to develop interactive CD-ROMs and other IT solutions.
